Uniondale Roosevelt Weed & Seed

WHAT IS WEED & SEED?
Operation Weed and Seed is foremost a strategy rather than a grant program-which aims to prevent, control, and reduce violent crime, drug abuse and gang activity in targeted high-crime neighborhoods across the country. The Weed and Seed strategy involves a two-pronged approach. First, law enforcement agencies and prosecutors cooperate in “weeding out” criminals who participate in violent crime and drug abuse. Second,
“Seeding” brings human services to the area, encompassing prevention, intervention, treatment, economic development and neighborhood restoration and revitalization. A community-oriented policing component bridges weeding and seeding strategies.
The Weed and Seed strategy recognizes the importance of linking and integrating Federal State and local law enforcement and criminal justice efforts with Federal, State and local social services, and private sector and community efforts to maximize the impact of existing programs and resources. It also recognizes the paramount importance of community involvement. Community residents must be empowered to assist in solving problems in their neighborhoods.
